Annie Sen is a multi-talented lady. She’s a voice-over artist, a model, and a theatre actress. Her photographs for Enlighten India Productions, under the brand name of EIP, in which she appears in a saree as Manimalika, an iconic figure from Tagore’s short story Manihara, linger in the imagination and transport us to a period when Bengali signified elegance and worldliness. Annie has embodied the main character of Tagore’s Manihara (1898), Manimalika. The story revolves around a woman, who stays in a large mansion with her husband. “Mani”,”hara” – Robbed of the Gem is a terrifying portrayal of the perils of clinging to worldly goods. Moni (which means ‘gem’ or ‘jewel’ in Bengali) is a childless woman who is obsessed with her jewellary (which fills her emptiness of being barren). Phani Bhushan (her husband) adores her, but when he needs her jewellary (which he gave her as a present) to help him pay off debts, she steals it rather than helping him. She is robbed and slain along the journey supposedly by her brother and she returns to torment her poor, bereft husband.
